Volunteer Opportunities
May is Buddy Poppy month. There are Buddy Poppy informational cards available at the post. The cards are behind the bar and you can ask one of the bartenders for them. The intention for them is that people will make a donation and they can write on the card their own name, or a veteran they are honoring/remembering, or a similar notation. The cards can be posted on the wall at the post.
The volunteer opportunity is that if you are at the post, it would be great if you could help promote this program to others. Let's fill the wall with them!
05/11 - Day of Service. Help clean off the veterans' grave markers in Union Cemetery, St. Mary's Cemetery, or St. John's in the Wilderness Cemetery. at 9:00 a.m. Supplies you may want to bring - gloves, kneeling pad, bucket for water, scrub brush, edging tool. Memorial Day - parade starts at City Hall at 9:30 and follows a route to Union Cemetery for the ceremony there. At 2:00 at Veteran's Park by the VFW is the ceremony honoring comrades lost at sea. Contact Bob Krominga, 651-295-1008, with questions.
For Memorial Day at the Comrades Lost at Sea ceremony in the afternoon. Last year one of our auxiliary members walked around with a poppy can and a bunch of poppies. They handed out the poppies to people and accepted any donations that people may have given. This was a good way to support and promote the Buddy Poppy program, and also raise funds for our auxiliary. I think it would be helpful to have several people doing this, rather than just one. If you are willing to help with this volunteer service, please let Deb know.
06/12 - 9:30-11:00 - Women Veterans Day event at the White Bear Lake Senior Center. Contact Deb Courts-Brown, 651-964-5758, or the Senior Center, 651-653-3121, with questions.
July 4th - all day. Possible big event at Marketfest with a need for lots of volunteers. More information will be provided as details are available.
July 30 - August 4 - Washington County Fair. The Cooties have had a pronto pup stand at this event for a number of years. An opportunity has come up to take over the stand previously used by the Stillwater VFW which unfortunately has now disbanded. I believe they offered hamburgers and other items. Our Cooties will need additional support if they are going to take on this added responsibility and potential income. Please let Deb know ASAP if you think you could be available to assist
Aug 17 - Golf Benefit VFW Post 1782 Auxiliary. Contact Max at 615-295-6636 to help out.
Sep 21 - White Bear Township Days at Polar Lake Park. Family food, fun and bands from 2 to 8 PM with fireworks at 8PM. We will need volunteers. Mike is your contact.
